VGH recognized as North American leader in advanced life support

Vancouver, BC – Nick Kanaan knows the medical system better than most people. He lost two siblings to cystic fibrosis at a young age and the disease nearly cost him his life. Thanks to innovative technology and a dedicated team of health care professionals at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), Nick is breathing normally and chasing his young daughter around the playground.

Downtown Eastside clinics provide drug-free options for chronic pain management

Vancouver, BC – Vancouver resident Kim Williams has been living with chronic pain for years: degenerative bone disease in her spine, fibromyalgia, damaged cartilage in her knees and lingering issues after recovery from a broken neck. Thanks to a first-of-its-kind pilot program in the Downtown Eastside that offers physiotherapy, individual and group counselling and other treatments, Williams is now getting stronger and learning to manage her pain without the use of opioids or any pain medication.

VCH’s newest infection fighter has a name

Vancouver, BC – He's four months old, playful and adventurous. And he now answers to the name Finn. "Finn is a great name for our new recruit," says Teresa Zurberg, K9 Handler with the C. Difficile Canine Scent Detection Program at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH).  "He is a clever guy," just like his namesake, Huckleberry Finn.

Richmond patients see improved access to nuclear imaging thanks to new gamma camera

Richmond, BC – A first-in-Canada gamma camera in operation at Richmond Hospital has now seen its 500th patient. The new imaging machine recently unveiled by Vancouver Coastal Health in July scans 20 per cent faster than the previous one, and is reducing wait times for valuable diagnostic procedures by 10 to 15 per cent.
